An assemblage of affectionately written notes and photographs, the original diary chronicles of the journey of one child’s first month in an infant-toddler centre in Reggio Emilia. First published in Italian in 1983. The documentation of Laura and the watch is now well known. Laura was 11 months old when the photographs were taken by her teacher.

Tiziana Filippini, reflecting on the photos while in Tasmania for the Hundred Languages Exhibition in 2007 commented that the import of this occurrence was not recognised by the teachers. Later, when looking at the photos, Malaguzzi commented that something remarkable has happened in this small incident. The prevailing ideas about the image of the child were challenged by the images of Laura creating and testing a hypothesis. These photos along with the teacher’s comments are included in this book. This is an example of documentation from 1983 and was part of a study process of an infant’s adjustment to an infant toddler centre.

Contents:

  • Documentation of one child’s growth, discoveries and milestones
  • Purpose and uses of infant diary to reflect on children’s experiences and interpret the quality of that experience
  • Examples of narrating experiences in order to understand them. Records teachers thoughts and responses to experiences in the infant toddler centre
  • Introduction to the Arcobalano Infant Toddler Centre

Teacher’s research questions:

  • How can young children adjust to a children’s centre?
  • How could this adjustment influence them and their relationship towards their parents?
  • How could parents and teachers ‘share’ a baby?
