Paul Johnson – Environment as teacher: four pedagogies

Environment as teacher: four pedagogies

Presented by Paul Johnson on Saturday 29 October, 2016 Galilee Catholic School, SA

About the workshop:

In recent years, moves to naturalise learning environments have gained momentum. Yet landscapes can be more than assortments of objects; potentially they are collations of processes that influence three levels of learning.

This workshop offers provocations: hands-on experiences, explorations of pedagogical potential and shared reflections, to illustrate that landscapes influence what people learn, how learning takes place and where learning may lead. In so doing, participants are invited to reconceptualise landscapes as places which can expand learning through liberating imagination.

About the presenter:

Paul Johnson’s work as an educator spans more than thirty years with learners from nursery to tertiary (as well as all places between). From 2007 to 2015 he worked part-time at Galilee Catholic School, Aldinga, where he played a formative role in conceiving and developing the school’s physical and pedagogical environments as educative resources. Galilee was also the site of research for Paul’s PhD: Grounds for Learning: Schoolyard activities as provocations, scaffolds and mediators for childhood learning. In recent years, he has presented, published and consulted on designs and professional learning that support inquiry. Currently, Paul is curriculum co-ordinator at Arbury Park Outdoor School.
