ATELIER SPACES AS CONTEXTS FOR LEARNING
“Ateliers are environments promoting knowledge and creativity, suggesting questions and generating evocations; they are beauty that produces knowledge and vice-versa, the places where “the hundred languages” are enacted.” (Reggio Children, Reggio Children – Ateliers)
Our first meeting for the year we are hoping to bring some practical sharing and ideas around the creation of and use of what is termed an atelier within a learning environment. Using atelier spaces as learning contexts allows children to explore on a variety of levels many different languages and concepts. We invite you to share with us examples of your application of an atelier space. Please send photos of your spaces to johnsonn@krb.nsw.edu.au or bring them along on the night for discussion.
The following questions will challenge and initiate dialogue around ateliers.
What do you think is meant by the term atelier?
What possibilities for ateliers can you think of?
What resources / languages could you use to create an atelier?
We will look at examples of ateliers in Reggio Emilia and discuss what concepts are being researched by the children in these spaces.
We will look at the deeper understanding children are able to gain through ‘play’ within an atelier spaces.
