Children aged up to three years old (thoughtfully called infants and toddlers) have sophisticated developmental capacities and, so, specific developmental needs. It could be argued, however, that infants and toddlers in ECE settings do not always receive the value, resourcing, and sophisticated attention they deserve. Drawing on rights-based philosophies from the educational project of Reggio Emilia, this workshop examines images of infants and toddlers as both vulnerable and competent, then unpacks how these play out in interdependent ECE practices.
Using a practice theory approach and the notion of an ‘ECE pedagogy complex’ to frame discussions, participants will be invited to:
So, please join us! It will be wonderful to spend focused time honouring our youngest citizens.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Dr Andi Salamon is a Senior Lecturer in early childhood development and pedagogy in the Faculty of Education at the University of Canberra. Taking a respectful, reciprocal and participatory approach and using the theory of practice architectures, her research focuses on infant cognitive, social and emotional development and how these come together in holistic communicative practices. Andi incorporates her research into her teaching to help advocate for and transform infant pedagogy and uphold infants’ rights to quality early childhood education. She keeps children and families at the front of her mind in her work and encourages pre-service teachers, colleagues and early years leaders to do the same.
