2026 National Close the Gap Day Statement – 19 March 2026

REAIE acknowledges the significance of Close the Gap Day and the ongoing call for health and education equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across Australia. We approach this day with respect — recognising the strength, leadership and wisdom of First Nations communities.

For more than a decade, Australians from every corner of the country have shown their support by marking National Close the Gap Day each year. This day offers a change opportunity – to affirm that equality is not simply an aspiration, but a fundamental right for all. We recognise that for many First Nations peoples, progress toward health and education equity has felt uneven and too slow. Meaningful change requires sustained commitment, culturally responsive  practices, deep listening, and genuine partnership with communities.

At REAIE, we understand that true change and wellbeing begins in the early years. Guided by the principles of the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we see all children as capable citizens whose identities, culture and sense of belonging shape lifelong outcomes. When all children experience environments that honour culture, language and connection to Country, this strengthens not only individual wellbeing but our nation’s community strength.

Days of recognition can feel symbolic if they are not accompanied by meaningful action. Our commitment, therefore, extends beyond today. It is reflected in our relationships, our organizational goals, advocacy, and our everyday practice. We commit to listening deeply to First Nations voices and working together towards embedding Indigenous perspectives authentically and respectfully across our work.

At REAIE, we will continue working towards pedagogical practices that encompass  the 100 languages and focus on the development of social justice amidst global, climate and digital change.

On Close the Gap Day 2026, REAIE reaffirms that equity must be lived, not simply stated. Through education grounded in respect, relationship and shared responsibility, we will continue to contribute to a future where equality is realised in practice, not only in promise. This is essential to the future of all Australian children and their families.
