Early Childhood Educators’ Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the educators who work with, for and alongside children and young people. It is a time to acknowledge their professionalism, dedication and advocacy, and the significant contribution they make to the lives of children, families and communities.
This year’s theme, “The Future Starts with Us!”, reminds us that tomorrow is shaped through the relationships, experiences and opportunities we create with children today. It recognises the vital role early childhood educators play, not only in supporting children’s learning and development, but also in fostering the conditions for children to thrive as capable, valued and active members of society.
This message resonates strongly with “a nostalgia for the future”, a powerful philosophical concept shared by Loris Malaguzzi, founder of the Reggio Emilia educational approach. It describes an active and optimistic yearning for a better tomorrow, one that guides how we value, support and educate children in the present. Rather than simply preparing children for what comes next, it challenges us to recognise their potential and to work towards a society that is more just, inclusive and hopeful.
Every day, early childhood educators hold space for our youngest citizens. They create environments where children feel safe, respected and valued, fostering a sense of belonging that underpins learning, wellbeing and participation. Through intentional teaching, deep listening and meaningful encounters, educators support children to build connections, express themselves, explore their ideas, develop a strong sense of identity and agency, and participate in the life of their communities.
In a rapidly changing and increasingly complex world, this work has never been more important. Early childhood educators recognise children as bearers of rights and citizens of today. They advocate for children’s voices to be heard, honour their diverse ways of being and learning, and help lay the foundations for empathy, resilience, creativity and hope.
