Happy Birthday Loris!
REAIE, as the reference point for Reggio Children in Australia, invites the Australian Reggio community to join with us in celebrating the anniversary of the birth of renowned philosopher and educator, Loris Malaguzzi, (23 February 1920 – 30 January 1994).
In the aftermath of the devastation of war in Italy, Loris Malaguzzi, a young and visionary educator met with a small group of parents in Villa Cella who were determined to create
a new school for their children. Together, they imagined education as a space for optimism, innovation and freedom of thought—where learners could question without fear and where new ways of thinking were actively welcomed. This vision, of building a strong humanity, established the foundations of an approach to education, that we know today as the educational project of Reggio Emilia.
The schools of Reggio Emilia continue to evolve as transformational educational contexts. Guided by Malaguzzi’s powerful legacy, informed by his deep belief in the competence of young children as key protagonists in their own learning, the educational project of Reggio Emilia continues to inspire educators, philosophers, academics, and communities around the world. The Municipal schools of Reggio Emilia are invested in the concept of education as a common good and participation as a right.
Now, perhaps more than ever, we turn to Malaguzzi’s courageous vision, his absolute belief that education can change the world for the better, of a world where the rights of all are honoured and peace is a reality, not merely an aspiration. On the anniversary of your birthday, we say THANK YOU Loris!
