This year’s NAIDOC theme, “50 Years of Deadly”, celebrates five decades of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence, leadership, and cultural strength. It invites educators to recognise First Nations Peoples in Australia’s story—holders of deep knowledge, memory, creativity, and resilience. It invites us to pause, listen, and reconsider what we think we know about children, learning, and this Country.
As educators inspired by the Educational Project of Reggio Emilia, we speak of the rich image of the child, the hundred languages, and the rights of all children. NAIDOC Week reminds us that these ideas have long been lived, protected, and embodied in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities—where children grow within deep cultural lineages, surrounded by story, kinship, Country, and collective responsibility.
“50 Years of Deadly” calls us to honour those who have carried culture, fought for justice, and ensured that children and young people can walk forward with confidence and pride. It invites us to reflect on our own responsibilities:
• How do we walk gently on Country?
• How do we listen—to land, to community, to children?
• How do we create environments where First Nations children see themselves reflected with dignity, joy, and truth?
• How do we ensure all children understand that the story of this land is far older, richer, and more powerful than they may have been taught?
As we enter NAIDOC Week 2026, let this be a moment to recommit to pedagogy grounded in relationships, reciprocity, and solidarity. A moment to imagine the next fifty years shaped by educators who believe that learning is a democratic act—one that honours stories, upholds rights, and nurtures hope.
What might become possible if we choose to learn from the world’s oldest living cultures—not as guests, but as respectful partners?
