REAIE Statement on January 26th

REAIE recognises the diverse history of Australia and is committed to upholding the rights of all people. Australia Day, observed on 26 January, represents a day of complex significance. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it represents profound sorrow, symbolising loss of land, culture, and lives. As a nation, we must reflect on the ongoing impact of this date and its role in perpetuating trauma for First Nations peoples.

Guided by the principles of Reggio Emilia, which celebrate children as active participants in shaping their world, we stand by our commitment to honour Aboriginal cultures as integral to our collective identity. By listening deeply and promoting dialogue, we create opportunities to heal and grow together.

We envision a future where the strengths, wisdom, and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples shape the learning of every child. Cultivating spaces where First Nations perspectives are celebrated empowers all children to embrace diversity, empathy, and mutual respect. Together, we can build a shared story grounded in reconciliation, understanding, and unity, honouring the past while creating a hopeful future.
