REAIE Reconciliation Week Statement 2026

REAIE Reconciliation Week Statement

During National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), we are reminded of the importance of learning, listening deeply, and taking meaningful action that honours the spirit of reconciliation and advances justice for First Nations peoples. In 2026, the theme “All In” calls on each of us to commit wholeheartedly – every day, in every interaction.

This year is also significant, as it marks the 25-year anniversary of Reconciliation Australia – a milestone that invites reflection on progress and presents a renewed invitation and commitment to the work ahead.

This call to action resonates deeply with REAIE and the principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach©. Loris Malaguzzi’s image of the child positions children as capable, curious, and active co-constructors of knowledge. In this view, education is not about transmission of knowledge, but about participation, listening, collaboration, and shared discovery.

Through practices of sharing and storying, we create spaces where diverse voices are valued and respected. These approaches align with reconciliation by honouring First Nations perspectives, cultures, and ways of knowing. The image of the teacher also shifts – from instructor to co-learner – walking alongside children in inquiry and reflection.

Being “All In” means embracing co-construction and genuine collaboration. It asks us to challenge outdated models and instead foster environments where relationships, respect, multiple perspectives, and inquiry shape learning.

As Karen Mundine, CEO of Reconciliation Australia, reminds us, reconciliation is “not a passive activity,” and “we need to take actions that create a better society”- it requires all of us to step forward, take action, and be allies.

Together, we can create learning environments that reflect reconciliation in action – grounded in respect, connection, and shared understanding.
