National Sorry Day, 26th May, is a National Day of Commemoration for the Stolen Generations in Australia. On this day REAIE acknowledges and remembers the many children and families of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people forcibly removed from their homes, many never to be reunited. We recognise that child removal statistics today are higher than during the Stolen Generations. Whilst acknowledging these atrocities, Sorry Day is also a day to admire the significant strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the healing process which continues today.
REAIE shares this statement today to acknowledge that we have not forgotten and continue to listen and learn. We recognise the ongoing impact of the Stolen Generation and commit to our mission of ‘reimagining children’s education for a just society’. In your conversations with children, families and colleagues, we encourage you to consider the different ways of telling this story, sharing in the healing towards reconciliation.
