Program Description

Through this workshop, participants will explore the relationship between materials, knowledge, learning and thinking. They will come to know how materials can be used to construct meaning and consolidate understanding.

Participants will:

• Through hands-on experiences gain a deeper understanding of what Reggio Emilia refers to as The Hundred Languages of Children
• Unpack the process by which children construct a literacy in language
• Gain a deeper understanding of how children construct knowledge and meaning when they work with materials
• Understand how the physical properties of materials influence thought.

The Hundred Languages of Children workshop brings practice and theory together and includes documentation of work with children.

An understanding of the Reggio Emilia principles and practice is required in order to fully participate in this workshop.

PRESENTERS:

Kate Mount is the former Director of St Peter’s Girls’ Early Learning Centre in Adelaide where she was instrumental in the transformative practice using the Reggio Emilia Educational Project as the foundation. For many years Kate actively built networks both internally and externally, convening the REAIE Adelaide Network for an extended period of time before joining the National Committee. Kate has had the experience of attending three International Study Tours as well as many local and national REAIE professional development opportunities. Kate has also been a member of the REAIE Professional Learning Group and for the past 12 months held the position of convenor. Kate is invested in building capacity in others and creating collaborative professional communities, giving back to this incredible organisation that has been pivotal in her career.

Caterina Pennestri graduated in Contemporary Art at the University of Bologna in Italy. She has a Master in Art Education and she completed her post graduate training in Reggio Emilia collaborating with Reggio Children. Previously at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Caterina since 2015 works as Atelierista at St Peter’s Girls’ ELC working alongside children, educators and families supporting and inspiring the Hundred languages.
