Encounters with the graphic language

Encountering the graphic language; an exploration into the identity and integral role this language plays in the process of children’s learning and how they make meaning of the world around them.

Through a deep exploration of the metaphor of the hundred languages, this webinar presented by Kirsty Liljegren and Sonia van Hout will explore the conditions for learning that enrich opportunities for the graphic language informed by the pedagogy of listening.

In unravelling various examples, Sonia and Kirsty will disrupt the ‘decorative product’ practice by valuing drawing as a tool of analysis to inform our understanding of children and designing learning contexts.

Kirsty Liljegren is a highly regarded education consultant in the early childhood and early primary sector, working both nationally and internationally.

Sharing her wisdom and experience as a teacher and leader in the sector over many years, stories from practice punctuate her sessions. Kirsty draws on her insatiable curiosity about learning with and for children and adults in her welcoming and relatable style.

Through her attitude and disposition of being a researcher, Kirsty believes that we can authentically make a difference in the lives of children and families as we optimise the conditions for children to learn and flourish as part of a community of learners.

Kirsty’s approach to her work builds from a commitment to the right of educators to be intellectually and emotionally engaged in what they do as part of this profession.

As a long-standing committee member of the Reggio Emilia Australia Information Exchange, Kirsty proudly volunteers to support the vital work of this not-for-profit organisation to reimagine how education can be.

Sonia van Hout is a Teacher with specialist knowledge in the Early Years. Sonia has over 30 years’ experience in teaching and leadership and began her career in occasional care, sessional kindergarten and long day settings before moving to primary years. She has worked in the private, government and independent sector. Sonia is a past and current committee member of the Reggio Emilia Australia Information Exchange (REAIE) and has attended three study tours to Reggio Emilia. She is curious about the implications of the intersection of Wellbeing, Art and Creativity and how these can be a platform for children to explore and convey story.
