Program Description

REAIE invites you to the Reggio Emilia Australia Information Exchange (REAIE) 2023 Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 4 April 7.30pm (AEST) on Zoom.

Guest speaker Dr. Karen Szydlik will present on:

When thinking and talking are not enough: coming-to-know through the arts

In this presentation Karen will share significant moments in her professional and personal life where the creative arts have brought her to a new place of knowing. Karen will invites participants to consider how and where ‘we know’; to consider our definition of knowing and to contemplate our own agency through paying attention and acting on what we come to know. These stories will weave their way through the presentation as Karen shares her learning from children, as an early childhood teacher, and as a lecturer, parent and partner. Drawing on these significant life moments Karen will reveal how the arts have shown their capacity to create spaciousness and a place for reflection, meaning-making, wholeness, and compassion.

Bio, by Dr. Karen Szydlik (aka Schaller)

Bios are difficult. Who am I now? Who am I becoming? Am I different from the person who wrote her own bio last time? How do I want you to know me? What do I need you to know?

I want you to know that I am always wondering; always learning and always growing. I am, at times, filled with self-doubt, and at other times I stand firmly and comfortably alongside my new knowings. Professionally, my roots are in early childhood education. That foundation has taught me so much about myself and others, and been a rich fertile place for growth in areas such as the Arts, social justice and Indigenous knowledges, mostly because of those I have met along the way. I stand on the shoulders of giants and actually I stand next to them too, often in their shadow.

The Reggio Emilia Approach ® has guided me in my approach to teaching adults and has nurtured my poetic and lyrical languages in a way that my own early education in Australia failed to do. I am a member of the Academic Staff at MIECAT, an institution whose values I align strongly with. I teach in the Master’s and Doctoral programs and in 2021 I was awarded my Doctorate in Therapeutic Arts Practice through my work, “A search for presence”. I am still wondering “what next?”.
