The Hundred Languages of Today and the Future
“The hundred languages are a metaphor for the extraordinary potentials of children, their knowledge-building and creative processes, the myriad forms with which life is manifested and knowledge is constructed.
The hundred languages are understood as having the potential to be transformed and multiplied in the cooperation and interaction between the languages, among the children, and between children and adults.”
From Indications, Preschools and Infant-toddler Centres of the Muncipality of Reggio Emilia
When Loris Malaguzzi spoke of the metaphor of The Hundred Languages over 50 years ago it is wondered if he could have imagined the possibilities for expression of ideas and knowledge that exist today and into the future. The ‘languages’ that children have and will have at hand to share their understandings and unique reflections on the world are possibly very different to how those ideas were shared in the 1960’s.
Join us in a sharing of thoughts around The Hundred Languages of Today and the Future.
What languages do children enter into dialogue with today?
What languages may play a significant role in the future?
Do traditional languages still have a place in a ‘modern’ world?
Can we keep dialogue between old and new languages?
